Five players Aston Villa need to look at signing this month

Conor Hourihane

Tom Pearce of Villa Till I Die takes us through 5 players he believes Aston Villa should be itching to sign in this month’s transfer window.

Conor Hourihane

It is no doubt that Villa need to get one or two centre midfielders into the club in the January transfer window and Steve Bruce and his team need to do whatever it takes to get the current Barnsley captain in. The Irish midfielder is exactly what the Villa team needs right now with five goals and 11 assists, Hourihane can certainly offer the Villa team something going forward from midfield as well as giving us a much needed new set piece taker. As well as that we shouldn’t ignore his defensive capabilities as he has completed 78% of his tackles this season.

Henri Lansbury

The Nottingham Forest midfielder is certainly someone you’d love to have in your team and definitely someone you wouldn’t like to line up against. Another centre midfield option, the ex Arsenal man has made it clear that he wants the move to Villa Park this season. Lansbury is another player who can add goals and create chances from midfield and who has scored six goals and made three assists, more than all of Villa’s midfield put together. The Englishman also has the steel to make him a big player in the middle of the park.

James Bree

Right back has been a problem area for the Villa for quite a few years and with the summer signing of Ritchie De Laet out for the season, this makes Alan Hutton the mainstay at right back. James Bree comes from Barnsley’s academy who has produced the likes of John Stones of Man City and Mason Holgate of Everton. The 19 year old right back is good at getting forward but is just as able with his defensive duties as well. He’s composed on the ball and is good when it comes to decision making. There are Premier League clubs circling Bree but hopefully the promise of first team football will lure him to Villa Park.

Robbie Brady

Villa have lacked width at times this season and Robbie Brady is someone can bring exactly that as well as the capability to play anywhere along the midfield and at full back. The Republic of Ireland international put in some very good performances in the Euro’s but hasn’t had the same performances in a Norwich shirt this season. Bruce is known to be an admirer of Brady after he signed the winger for Hull permanently in 2013. He has three goals and three assists in the Championship this season but the Irishman would be a very good pull and would help our push for promotion if we could fend off the Premier League clubs targeting him.

Jordan Rhodes

It is no doubt that Villa are short of goalscorers now Jonathon Kodjia has gone to AFCON. With Jordan Ayew also going to the tournament, Rudy Gestede being sold and Rushian Hepburn Murphy not playing until the contract saga is over it leaves us with Gabby Agbonlahor and Ross McCormack to lead the line and they’re not exactly firing from all cylinders. Jordan Rhodes isn’t getting game time in Teesside and Middlesbrough are looking to sell. The English forward has the best goalscoring record in the Championship in the past five years and would certainly give Villa a bit more going forward in terms of scoring goals. Rhodes has scored 89 goals in the past five seasons in the Championship which is pretty special. I think Xia should pay what he needs to bring the forward in this month.
