FA Cup 1st Round Predictions: goals at Gresty Road?

Crewe v Rotherham

These teams last met in their 13/14 League One campaigns, with both fixtures producing six goals. Rotherham threaten to continue that theme: they have the joint-best attacking record yet have conceded more than three of the bottom six, after a 3-1 home defeat to strugglers Gillingham. Top scorer Kieffer Moore could cause aerial problems for Crewe, who have League Two’s joint-fifth worst defensive record after shipping five in their last two. A good run in the FA Cup will be essential to rebuilding confidence at Gresty Road but David Artell’s Railwaymen are starting to show a soft underbelly. 1-3

Ebbsfleet v Doncaster

Both teams celebrated promotion last season. Ebbsfleet United won the play-offs to reach the National League where, bizarrely, they have lost the joint-fewest games in the division, but are in the bottom half. Their squad consists of Sam Magri, who faced England for Malta in September and made some good interceptions with the occasional moment of ball-playing quality. Doncaster Rovers though have picked up nine points from their last five games to ease the pressure on Darren Ferguson. They scored 10 goals in that run, which proves they do have quality, as Benjamin Whiteman showed with his well-struck winner at Bury. 1-2

Forest Green v Macclesfield

FA Cup ties in the West Country are a positive omen for Macclesfield Town, who have beaten Swindon twice in this competition in recent years. The Silkmen also knocked out Championship winners Cardiff in 2013, then played Chelsea going back even further. A sturdy defence plus the goals of forward Scott Wilson, who has scored six in his last 14, sees them second in the National League. Forest Green Rovers were promoted from that division last term thanks to the goals of Christian Doidge, who has scored five times so far in the league above. Keanu Marsh-Brown and Reece Brown are starting to provide some creativity for the big man and the Greens have won their last three. 2-1
